SMACNA Looks To Future Changes And Contractor Opportunities

Historically, Maui, Hawaii has been a favorite convention site for SMACNA members. This year proved no different with more than 1,400 people attending the association’s 65th annual convention Oct. 19–23.

The convention combined a mix of educational sessions, business, and entertainment. Closing out the convention was the exciting rock band, Huey Lewis and The News.

The Contractor of the Year award went to former SMACNA President Keith Wilson, Albuquerque, N.M., for his dedication to promoting partnerships between labor and management and his vision for the future. The award is presented annually in memory of SNIPS magazine founder Ed Carter and his son Nick Carter, magazine publisher and editor.

David McCoy
David M. McCoy, executive director of the New Mexico Sheet Metal Contractors Association (NMSMCA) in Albuquerque, N.M., received the Petersen-Dunn Award for Chapter Executive of the Year.

This year SMACNA recognized the Pacific Cancer Foundation with a $5,000 check for helping people on Maui whose lives are touched by cancer. It is a SMACNA tradition to recognize a local charity in the convention host city.

Recipients of legislative awards for their efforts on behalf of SMACNA were Dwight D. Silvia, CEO of D.D.S. Industries Inc., Somerset, Mass., Legislative Contractor of the Year; David Oschman, president of Striker Sheet Metal Inc., of Medford, N.Y., Distinguished Legislative Service Award; and Thomas J. Gunning, executive director of the SMACNA Boston Chapter, Chapter Executive Legislative Advocate of the Year.

At the annual business meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22, four members were elected to serve four-year terms on the Board of Directors: William Blazvick, Royal Metal Works Inc., Las Vegas, Nev.; Richard Freeman, Stromberg Metal Works Inc., Beltsville, Md.; Richard C. Mertz, H. T. Lyons Inc., Allentown, Pa.; and Matthew Smith, Smith Heating and Air Conditioning Inc., Stockton, Calif.

John Ilten, president of Ilten’s Inc., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was installed as the 2008-2009 SMACNA president. Ron Palmerick, of AABCO Sheet Metal Co., Ridgewood, N.Y., was designated immediate past president and received his president’s pin, plaque, and gift in appreciation for his year’s service.

SMACNA’s 66th annual convention is scheduled for the Desert Springs JW Marriott Hotel & Spa, Palm Desert, Calif., Oct. 11-15, 2009.
