On August 17, President Bush signed The Pension Protection Act, P.L. 109 - 280, which the Senate and House passed after years of debate just before the Congressional summer recess began. The law will affect all single and multiemployer defined benefit plans, including the National Pension Fund and local pension funds. Most of the new law’s provisions will take effect in 2008.

Participation increased in the 2006 SMACNA Safety Excellence Award Program (SSEAP) as over 295 firms submitted surveys, representing 56.1 million man-hours worked in the 2005 calendar year. The SSEAP evaluates safety data, identifies trends, and recognizes SMACNA members with the lowest incidence rates in the prior calendar year.

According to the Construction Labor Research Council (CLRC), wage and fringe settlements reported so far this year have resulted in an average first year increase of 4.6 percent ($1.74) up from 4.1 percent ($1.58) for the same comparable period in 2005.
