The U.S. Congress recently passed H.R. 1, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 and the President signed the bill into Public Law 111-5 on Feb. 17 in Denver, Colo. The recovery plan includes historic, massive levels of discretionary spending for infrastructure investment, particularly in energy efficiency retrofit projects across nearly all federal building categories. New federal construction is a prominent part of the federal building stimulus effort including military, health, transportation, public housing, environmental and general public office structures.

On the other side of this recession, I truly believe there are great work opportunities in store for SMACNA members. Now while things are a bit slow is the time to rev up on education and plan to attend SMACNA’s 66th annual convention, Oct. 11-15, in Palm Desert, California.
SMACNA members who are proficient in BIM (Building Information Modeling), “Green” construction, energy efficiency, LEED, lean construction, and sustainability, will own the marketplace within the next five years. SMACNA’s annual convention will provide intensive training in these areas and more.

Continuing a longstanding tradition of supporting research by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), SMACNA recently presented a $10,000 check for ASHRAE’s research project, “1319-RP Laboratory Testing of Duct Fittings to Determine Loss Coefficients.” SMACNA chapters are encouraged to designate their local ASHRAE contributions to this project.
