Joining The Alliance for Industrial Efficiency (AIE), SMACNA voiced its support to Senator Shaheen and Senator Portman for their reintroduction of the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (S. 385). This critical legislation puts the focus on energy efficiency and promotes the benefits of combined heat and power (CHP) and waste heat to power (WHP). This bill will also help improve energy efficiency across the industrial, commercial, residential, and governmental sectors throughout the United States. President Obama signed components of a previous version of the bill into law in April 2015; it is already helping the U.S. use less energy, create jobs, and reduce emissions. Additionally, these reforms include initiatives which are predicted to produce large reductions in U.S. energy consumption and create close to 200,000 jobs all by the year 2030. SMACNA and the AIE expressed special appreciation for the provisions in Title II which reform industrial efficiency programs at the DOE. These programs support manufacturing sector deployment of supply-side energy efficiency opportunities.
