Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How will this year’s Convention look different?

Due to capacity restrictions mandated by the State of Hawaii and Maui County, SMACNA has restructuresd its Annual Convention schedule to accommodate the maximum permissible number of participants under these mandates.

  • Educational sessions will be in a general session format. The traditional final night dinner and show will convert to a reception-style event.
  • To maximize capacity within the mandates, SMACNA must assign seats for all indoor seated functions for all registrants to implement required contact tracing protocols.
  • Due to the capacity restrictions, SMACNA is forced to limit attendance at events. Spouse registrants will only be permitted to attend the following social functions: the College of Fellows Golf Outing, the Meet & Greet Reception, PAC Night, the Spouse Breakfast, and the Final Night Event. Spouse registrants will not be able to attend educational programming, the contractor lunches on Monday and Wednesday, and the Product Show.

Should the State of Hawaii and/or Maui County relax or lift capacity restrictions, SMACNA will revisit attendance limits.

If you have any questions regarding the restructured schedule, or the Convention in general, please contact the SMACNA Meetings Department at meetings@smacna.org

Q. How Do I Getting Around Once I Have Arrived on Maui?

If you plan to spend a significant amount of time off-property, SMACNA strongly recommends you arrange for a rental car, as this is the most reliable form of transportation on the island. Please note that rental cars are limited, so we suggest booking your reservation as soon as possible to ensure availability. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Uber and Lyft are not currently reliably available. Taxis are extremely limited, with the typical wait time approximately 30 minutes to an hour. To ensure you arrive on time to your destination, taxis should be booked at least 24 hours in advance.

Q. What Are Restaurants and Bars Like?

For the most up-to-date information on Maui County, please check the Maui County website, as well as Maui Strong Travel website.

Please note all restaurants are limited due to current capacity restrictions mandated by the State of Hawaii and Maui County; therefore, any outing, be it small or large, will be very difficult to secure at the last minute. We strongly suggest making dinner reservations as early as possible.

  • As of April 22, 2021, the restaurant capacity in Maui County is no more than 30%. The number of persons at one table can be no more than 10, provided they are all members of the same household, and no more than 5 if all persons are not members of the same household.
  • As of April 22, 2021, the bar capacity in Maui County is no more than 30%. Groups must be limited to five individuals per group and must maintain at least six feet of separation from other groups.

Q. Can My Spouse Attend Convention?

Absolutely. But as noted above, as long as the current capacity restrictions mandated by the State of Hawaii and Maui County remain in place, attendees registered as spouses will only be permitted to attend the social function including: the College of Fellows Golf Outing, the Meet & Greet Reception, PAC Night, the Spouse Breakfast, and the Final Night Event.

Should the state of Hawaii and/or Maui County relax and/or lift capacity restrictions, SMACNA will reevaluate the attendance at various functions. For example, should capacities be sufficiently increased, spouses would be permitted to attend the group lunches on Monday and Wednesday, as well as general education sessions. Should capacity limits not change, SMACNA will issue spouse registrants an appropriate rebate.

Q. Can My Children Attend Convention?

Children can accompany you on the trip, but due to capacity restrictions mandated by the State of Hawaii and Maui County, children will not be permitted at SMACNA sanctioned events.  Babysitting services are available through the hotels. Should you have any questions regarding these services, please reach out to meetings@smacna.org.
