GHS-What You Need to Know (Hazard Communication 2012)

On December 12, 2012, SMACNA will be providing a webinar entitled: GHS: What You Need To Know Federal OSHA recently adopted HazCom 2012—a revised Hazard Communication Standard that is aligned with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Employers will need to update their hazard communication programs to be in compliance with HazCom 2012.

The three HazCom 2012 provisions that SMACNA members need to focus on are container labeling systems, safety data sheets, and worker training; The new provisions are being phased in over the next several years. By December 1, 2013, employers must train employees on the new label elements, including the use of pictograms and hazard statements, and the format of the new safety data sheets (formerly called material safety data sheets – MSDS).

The purpose of the December 12 webinar is to provide attendees this required training, as well as an overview of the standard requirements.  Companies will then be in position to provide the training to other employees as well. SMACNA also recommends that members document the webinar training with the session description and attendance forms, and provide follow-up information as needed.

The session will be provided by Jennifer Silk, former Deputy Director of Standards and Guidance with Federal OSHA. She was, and continues to be, instrumental in the development of the Hazard Communication Standard. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the new rule requirements by having your employees attend this webinar.
