SMACNA Urges Senate to Support and Pass S. 1460, The Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017

SMACNA is urging the Senate to support and pass the bipartisan S. 1460, The Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017, cosponsored by Senators Murkowski (R-AK) and Cantwell (D-WA).  This important legislation is a successor to a bill that easily passed the Senate in the 114th Congress and the comprehensive energy conference report awaiting final action when the last Congress adjourned. Further, S. 1460 has been fast-tracked to the Senate floor due to its overwhelming support in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and amongst the Senate leadership.

S. 1460 contains a widely supported and comprehensive energy efficiency title and additional titles on energy infrastructure, public building retrofits and water system improvements. These provisions, which enjoy bipartisan support in Congress and are backed by SMACNA, would greatly benefit the American people, building owners and industrial productivity. In fact, the building energy performance contracting section as well as the upgrade to the building code provision alone are estimated to generate more than $60 billion in savings through 2040. Further delay by Congress to pass these and other long delayed energy efficiency provisions would only serve to threaten these savings at the expense of commercial, residential, institutional and industrial building owners. This modernized federal energy legislation represents a rare opportunity for the Senate to pass badly needed bipartisan energy legislation that will boost the efficiency the US energy system and economy in general.
