Updated electrical arc flash safety model program available

Jul 07, 2015

In January 2015, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) revised and updated their safety document “NFPA 70E—Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.” It is the standard for protection of workers from arc flash and related electrical hazards.

SMACNA prepared a model written program for members, “Electrical Safe Work Practices and NFPA 70E Arc Flash Safety,” to address the NFPA 70E and related hazards in the sheet metal and HVAC industry.

In response to the NFPA’s recent update, SMACNA has revised its existing model written program to meet these new requirements. They include new definitions and responsibilities of key personnel, revised personal protective equipment (PPE) categories, and conditional relief from certain protective measures by implementing a “task-based PPE risk assessment.”

Find the revised model program on SMACNA’s Safety Web page under “SMACNA Guide to Policies, Procedures and Model Written Programs.” It includes editable versions of a variety of policies and programs to assist with your safety and health compliance efforts.
