New SMACNA Board member Scott Vidimos, president of Vidimos Inc., East Chicago, Ind., has been actively involved in the industry and in helping children in his community for years.
He was elected to a four-year term on SMACNA’s Board of Directors at the close of SMACNA’s 73rd Annual Convention in October. From his first car to his favorite new technology, we asked him to share his advice on business and life and the guidance he would pass on to others.
The thing most people notice first about my office: I’m asked why my desk is so cluttered compared to my son’s desk, which is next to mine. I tell them it’s because I’ve had 37 years to accumulate and develop my collection.
The new technology I'm most excited about: I’m trying to figure out where scanning can fit into our fabrication work. We reverse-engineer a lot of parts, plus there are tough jobs to field-measure where scanning would capture all the pertinent information quickly and accurately.
My outside interests: Golf is my vice; my grandchildren are my passion.
My secret weapon for making jobs run smoother: Explaining a job in detail with a foreman so that he has built the job in his mind even before hitting the jobsite.
My favorite motto: “We do business with people.”
My biggest business hurdle: Filling the pipeline with people willing to be foremen. When I started in the business, my dad set the table for me by having talented job leaders on board and I want to make sure my son has a running start as well. It’s been tough finding people willing to take on the joys and challenges of running work.
The best business advice I ever received: Get to the office first. It shows your commitment to the business, but it has also been proven to be the best time to get a jump on the day.
There is nothing better than: Getting a customer and their spouse out for an afternoon or evening away from the house and work. I think it’s very important to include spouses.
The sports team I cheer: Any Chicago team, but especially the Blackhawks.
My first car: A Chevy Vega, though my first company car was a Camaro.
