Help prevent suicide in the construction industry—be aware, be prepared

Sep 12, 2017

NSPL_LogoSeptember is Suicide Prevention Month. The construction industry is at high-risk for this serious mental health issue and is making its prevention a priority.

A recent Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study on Suicide Rates by Occupational Group has brought this to the forefront, ranking construction as first in the number of suicide deaths and second in suicide rate.

Yet, it is preventable. That’s why SMACNA has joined the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention, which is sponsored by the Construction Financial Management Association. The Alliance brings together industry associations and organizations to spread the word with one goal: creating a zero-suicide industry.

We can all help prevent suicide. We can create a collective awareness effort simply by making suicide prevention talked about and accessible. Then, problems can be addressed before they reach the crisis point.

Find prevention resources in the “News and Advocacy” section of the Construction Financial Management Association’s website on Suicide Prevention in Construction.

Suicide Prevention Month highlights the numerous issues this dreaded problem creates. Learn how to get help, download materials, and find resources on their website, suicidepreventionlifeline.org. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s message is #BeThe1To.

We encourage you to read the Construction Industry Blueprint for Suicide Prevention in the Workplace, which provides valuable understanding of the issue.

Feel free to reach out to Mike McCullion, SMACNA director of market sectors and safety (mmccullion@smacna.org / (703) 995-4027), with any questions you have about our support of the Alliance.
