Making the Safety Case for Contractor Management

Contractor-Browz 250x164Are there actual safety benefits of using a third-party contractor management system to pre-qualify construction contractors? The National Safety Council’s Report: Making the Case for Contractor Management: Examining the Safety Benefits of Third-Party Management indicates that there are positive benefits in the form of improved jobsite safety and reduction of hazards. The contractors in the study were found to have better average Total Recordable Rates (TRR), Days Away, Restricted or Transferred (DART) Rates, and Lost Workday Rates (LWR) within individual industries and all industries as a whole.

SMACNA members who have participated in these owner-directed improvement programs understand the burden of compliance oftentimes involves substantial revisions to their firm’s written safety programs. SMACNA has a library of model policies to assist members in complying with these third-party evaluation requirements.
