Sports Stadiums Help Lead the Way to Greener Architecture

Mercedes Benz Stadium at night x250In recent years, sports stadiums have become showcases for green design. An added benefit of environmentally friendly arenas is they are cheaper to operate. Stadiums are also shining examples to sports fans and the general public that going green is not a hardship, but a choice.

The Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta is a prime example. SMACNA member R.F. Knox Inc. in Smyrna, Georgia, fabricated and installed the stadium’s spiral ductwork that contributed to the $1.5 billion sports arena being the first stadium to win Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification from the United States Green Building Council, which grades sustainable design and energy efficiency.
