Chapter in the News – SMACNA Boston celebrates Women’s Apprenticeship Day

Shamaiah TurnerThe city of Boston recently celebrated Women’s Apprenticeship Day to recognize women’s contributions and equal participation in the city’s apprenticeship programs.

The Building Trades Employers Association (BTEA), of which SMACNA Boston is affiliated, celebrated diversity at the Policy Group on Tradeswomen’s Issues’ first annual “Crushing Barriers for Women in Apprenticeship Awards” at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 Training Center in Dorchester, Mass., just outside of Boston. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry attended.

SMWIA Boston_Mayor Walsh“Apprenticeship has helped me establish a stable career and develop leadership skills,” said Shamaiah Turner, a fifth-year apprentice with Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 in Dorchester, Mass., who spoke about her apprenticeship. Ms. Turner works for SMACNA contractor Harrington Air Systems of Stoughton, Mass.

“I now feel as if I have a clear direction in my life” she adde, in a U.S. Department of Labor interview. “I love and understand my trade, I see the benefit of a good job and a union, and I have resources to advocate for those things that create a thriving society.”
