Chapter in the News: Putting smiles on kid's faces

Dec 11, 2017

The holidays this year will be a little brighter for the brave children at Akron Children's Hospital, Akron, Ohio, thanks to the big hearts of the members of SMACNA-Cleveland and Sheet Metal Workers Local 33.

"We're happy to help make a kid's Christmas a little brighter when they're going through tough times," said John Sindyla, CEO, SMACNA-Cleveland. "Every child loves to get something from Santa."

Recently in the early morning, some elves from SMACNA-Cleveland and Local 33 went on a toy buying spree, cruising the aisles of Toys R Us in Montrose to pick out $13,500 worth of toys for the kids They purchased teddy bears, dolls, Play-Doh, Star Wars and Batman Legos, and the popular TV show "Paw Patrol."

SMACNA-Cleveland Chapter President Thomas E. Martin, T.H. Martin Inc., Cleveland, Ohio, donated a truck to haul the truckload of toys to the hospital. There, volunteers loaded the toys onto five carts and stored them in the hospital's toy room. The goodies will be delivered a few days before Christmas when Santa arrives by the hospital's helicopter.

T.H. Martin Inc. is also working with the Akron Children's Hospital, performing the HVAC/mechanical work on the hospital's Consadine Professional Building, a 230,000-square-foot addition due to be completed in 2018.
