Last week SMACNA sent Capitol Hill staff to the House offices and a delivered a pointed letter to the U.S. House of Representatives asking bipartisan allies to express vocal opposition to the anti-Davis-Bacon amendments that Rep. Steve King (R-4th-Iowa) was to offer to H.R. 5515 – The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 (NDAA). These amendments were designed to undercut prevailing wages and skilled workforce training programs and were driven by misguided politics rather than smart economics.
However, an interesting turn of events occurred as the House was preparing to vote on H.R. 5515. Rep. King pulled his amendment due to verbal opposition from key GOP members and a unified Democratic minority lining up to oppose his efforts.
The good news is there are no anti-Davis-Bacon amendments to oppose right now, but a reminder that SMACNA National and its Chapters must remain ever vigilant and ready to defend the Davis-Bacon Act as amendments can and do come to the floor for a vote without notice.
As always, SMACNA Chapters are urged to contact their representative and reinforce SMACNA National’s efforts using SMACNA’s Take Action webpage.
