The Technical Services and Resources Department develops SMACNA technical standards and specifications and offers construction advice and guidance to numerous inquiries each year from architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, government personnel, and SMACNA members. They represent the membership on a variety of codes organizations as well. Following is a Midyear Report of the products and services they are providing the SMACNA membership.
Contributions to 2021 ICC and IAPMO Codes
SMACNA served as a voting member to both the International Code Council-International Mechanical Code and the International Association of Plumbing Mechanical Officials-Uniform Mechanical Code. These important code-making bodies have a direct impact on SMACNA members. Critical to SMACNA’s mission, the inclusion of SMACNA standards within these codes provides a competitive balance for the interests of the sheet metal and HVAC industry.
SMACNA technical staff continued to cross the country with this sought-after program that guides SMACNA members through the application of SMACNA’s most popular standards on duct construction, fire dampers, duct leakage and the use of industrial round and rectangular duct. These helpful technical programs have been conducted in Philadelphia, Boston, and Portland during the first half of 2018.
SMACNA recently revised the HVAC Duct Construction App to be compliant with the new iOS platform for users. The app provides SMACNA-compliant options for rectangular duct with dimensions from 1 inch to 120 inches for applications from negative to positive 10-inch water gage.
AMCA Air System Engineering and Technology-U.S. Conference
SMACNA technical staff attended the Air Movement and Control Association International’s Air System Engineering and Technology conference, which highlighted the major benefits of forced air systems for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial applications.
Chapter Technical Presentations
SMACNA technical staff conducted several technical programs at SMACNA chapters along with joint meetings with ASHRAE chapters to advance the knowledge of SMACNA Standards for the HVAC&R industry.
