SMACNA has been made aware that effective June 1, 2020, SMART will establish a Regional Council Structure in the Northwest. This newly created Northwest Council will encompass Locals 16 (Oregon), 23 (Alaska), 55 (Northwest Washington and Idaho), 66 (Washington) and 103 (Montana).
The Council has a formal structure and will be considered an intermediate body by SMART – meaning that it is not a local union, nor the International Union but rather an intermediate body between those two entities.
Per the Council bylaws, the Council will conduct it first election in 2023, and elections will take place every three years thereafter.
SMART believes the Council will serve to:
Promote more efficient operations.
Increase market share in the Northwest region.
Provide for greater mobility between the local unions so that contractors will be able to travel more freely and secure work opportunities.
Better serve owners in the Northwest markets.
SMACNA’s Labor Relations Department will continue to monitor the impact of this Council’s establishment on local contractors and chapters. It will work with those areas to address with SMART any difficulties that may arise for our members.
