SMACNA and its industry partners have asked officials at all levels to treat construction as essential services that should be continued during a time of national crisis. Further, SMACNA has applauded public officials for recognizing the vital role of HVAC and commercial refrigeration specialty contractors to countless clients building and maintaining facilities impacting the national defense, healthcare, public infrastructure in times of crisis, SMACNA have petitioned local, state and federal lawmakers to include HVACR technicians and engineers as essential businesses for continued roles in national commerce.
The COVID-19 virus has created uncertainty throughout the construction industry as public officials seek to limit commercial activity often impacting the construction industry. SMACNA representing many thousands of contractors and craft workers nationwide, has sought to balance the need to complete and maintain critical infrastructure projects with the safety of the construction workforce and the public.
While most local and state agencies have weighed the costs and benefits of continuing construction activities placing limits on contracting work, most have enabled public works and building inspection staff to work remotely or with additional safety precautions. Recent “shelter in place” orders limiting commercial activity have also wisely included exemptions for construction personnel. Importantly, public and private construction activities have been deemed as essential. SMACNA and its allies in industry and those in public office have been outspoken in seeking uniform guidance through legislation and regulatory language deeming construction services as essential for all levels of government.
