SMACNA’s 2019 Collective Bargaining Orientation Recap

CBO_2 600x450Held on March 12 in Dallas, Texas, the goal of the 2019 Collective Bargaining Orientation was to prepare contractors and chapter executives for their upcoming collective bargaining sessions.

Attendees came from all over the country to receive a basic legal overview on collective bargaining within the construction industry, guidance on preparing to bargain, bargaining strategies, an update on industry settlements and trends, and to review the latest changes in the Standard Form of Union Agreement.

Attendees heard from Tom Keating, former executive director of SMACNA Colorado, on the do’s and don’ts of preparing for collective bargaining. Carey Peters, executive director, Construction Labor Research Council (CLRC), led a discussion on SMACNA’s employment share numbers. Michael McNally, an attorney with Felhaber Larson, provided an in-depth overview of the legal framework for bargaining in the morning. Shortly after lunch, there was a panel discussion on tackling difficult negotiation issues led by Kim Best, Executive Vice President, Sheet Metal Contractors of Iowa, Inc., Jim Bigham, Director of Labor Relations, SMARCA of MN-ND-SD, Inc., John Quarnstrom, Executive Director, SMARCA of MN-ND-SD, Inc., and John Ferrante, Associate Executive Director, SMACNA Boston. The discussion was moderated by Deborah Wyandt, SMACNA Executive Director of Labor Relations.

CBO_1 600x344The day concluded with an open forum held by Deborah Wyandt, Joye Blanscett, SMACNA Director of Labor Services, Jason Watson, SMACNA Director of Labor Relations, and Michael McNally. They offered an overview of current industry bargaining issues, followed by a question and answer session.
