SMACNA’s Supervisor Training Academy was held April 28 – May 1 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Program participants were instructed by industry experts Kevin Dougherty, Stephane McShane, and Nic Bittle.
Topics covered included leadership, productivity, profitability measurement, project performance, industry trends, workforce development, and time management.
Participants learned how supervisors are an essential part of a construction team, and how important it is to have the skills necessary to succeed at the highest level.
Stephane McShane's session on Driving Project Success demonstrated how employees spend their time in the construction industry. Participants in the class volunteered to build a “lemonade stand” while others observed. They learned about preconstruction planning and labor efficiency and how it directly relates to primary time (building/installing the first time), secondary time (planning, material handling, set-up, etc.) and recoverable/preventable lost time (waiting for materials, equipment, manpower, rework, etc.) on a project. The project demonstrated how productivity can be measured and how to increase it.
In Kevin Dougherty's session, participants learned how to handle employees in difficult situations through role playing. Situations included harassment, change order disputes, employee complaints, managing difficult conversations, and controlling the conversation.
As an added bonus, the class enjoyed a Milwaukee Brewers game from the Milwaukee Tool suite at Miller Park.
The program culminated on May 1st with a tour of the Milwaukee Tool headquarters. Graduates left the program with renewed confidence in their ability to effectively lead their workforce now and in the future.
