SMACNA’s latest Safety and Health model program describes what leading and lagging indicators are and provides examples on how to use them in your company’s safety program. The guide explains how they can be used as a tool to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of your program, set program priorities and monitor progress.
Leading and lagging indicators are key performance indicators (KPIs). Leading indicators are proactive in nature and include safety initiatives aimed at preventing adverse events. Lagging indicators are reactive and measure the effectiveness of a program after the fact, focusing on when the damage or harm has occurred.
This program includes a model for companies with basic safety programs, and a model that uses more advanced indicators as an addition to existing safety programs. The guide also includes appendices defining the terms and examples of potential indicators and metrics.
