The July report on Pandemics and Productivity released by SMACNA’s New Horizon’s Foundation is making national headlines. A recent article in Construction Dive reported that U.S. construction industry productivity and profits have been hit hard across all sectors as a result of COVID-19 mitigation measures.
The validity of the report extends to other sectors in the construction industry as well. Adding to the validity of the data, Ken Simonson, chief economist at Associated General Contractors of America reflects similarities to what AGC members are experiencing. “The results are consistent with what I would expect — there are multiple obstacles to maintaining productivity on a jobsite,” Simonson said.
NHF Chairman Guy Gast agreed the trend will play out similarly across the entire construction industry. “There's a pretty good correlation. For example, if you're a carpenter or drywall or framing group, the same processes for fit-for-duty, for entry into the site, for cleaning and sanitation, those protocols are going to be the same," he said.
