A Message from New Horizons Chair Guy Gast
Field Leader Succession is the process for developing and transitioning new leaders to replace their predecessors at the foreman, general foreman, or superintendent level. Companies plan executive management succession seriously by investing heavily in talent identification, development, and transition. The same due diligence should guide field leadership succession.
To put this issue in perspective, FMI expects that 20% of current field managers will turnover by 2022 (FMI, 2017). This surpasses the expected level of turnover of all other positions in the construction industry and may have been accelerated by the impact of COVID-19.
The New Horizons Foundation previously published guidance on how to identify top talent in the sheet metal and HVAC industry (NHF White Paper: Tools for Hiring, Promotion and Talent Development of Sheet Metal and Mechanical Contractor Personnel, 2019).
Now, this newest white paper, Best Practices for Field Leader Succession, focuses its spotlight on best practices in field leadership transition from one generation to the next.
Talented field leaders arguably have the largest impact on our reputation, client satisfaction, and the bottom line. NHF’s Best Practices for Field Leader Succession white paper serves our purpose – giving SMACNA contractors a chance to grow.
