OSHA Rule Spells Out Employer Obligation To Pay For Protective Equipment

A new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) final rule clarifies the requirement that employers must provide personal protective equipment (PPE) at no charge to employees. The standard, effective May 15, 2008, applies to general industry (shop) and construction settings.

Capitol Hill Update: Contractor Accountability Moving Through Congress

A bill to increase accountability for contractors is progressing in Congress with Senate action on provisions expected after the July 4th recess. Since the beginning of the session, SMACNA has been working on the Contractors and Federal Spending Accountability Act, H.R. 3033 and S. 2904, which would increase oversight for awarding of public contracts and strengthen accountability in the suspension and debarment process. The House recently inserted the provisions of H.R. 3033 into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), H.R. 5856, with government-wide application.

Council Meeting Highlights: Recruiting Tools, Immigration, NPF, Best Practices

A recommendation for the National Pension Fund to broaden the definition of “construction employer” was a primary agenda issue at the June meeting of the Council of Chapter Representatives. The Council discussed the issue at length with input from legal counsel, but took no action.
