Suicide Prevention Month - Awareness is the Key to Prevention
The issue of Mental Health has been brought to the forefront recently by a CDC study on Suicide Rates by Occupational Group ranking construction as #1 in number of suicide deaths and #2 in suicide rate. This is an epidemic in the construction industry and yet preventable, and that’s why SMACNA has decided to join the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. This Alliance brings together many industry associations to spread the word on this critical topic with one goal: creating a zero-suicide industry.
September is Suicide Prevention Month which serves to highlight the numerous issues this dreaded problem creates. We encourage you to read Construction Industry Blueprint for Suicide Prevention that provides a valuable basis of understanding. If we make a collective effort toward making Mental Health treatment something that is talked about and accessible, problems can be addressed before they reach the crisis point of suicide.
