As leaders from SMACNA and SMART gathered in Las Vegas earlier this month for the 2022 Partners in Progress Conference, one portion of the event had an eye not towards the present or the past but the future. SMART and SMACNA collaborated on the Emerging Leaders Initiative, which focused on encouraging local unions and chapters to look for under 35 individuals who showed initiative when taking on a leadership role within the industry. Both SMACNA and SMART believe that by expanding the pool of young talent and embracing increased diversity and new perspectives, the benefits to the industry will be boundless. As part of this initiative, two emerging leaders from an area (one labor and one management) were allowed to register for the 2022 Partners in Progress Conference with their registration fees waived.
While attending the 2022 Partners in Progress Conference, Emerging Leaders participants attended a special reception headlined by leadership coach Don Riling, where they learned about strategies that they could use to enhance their leadership abilities. They also had access to unique networking opportunities with their peers throughout the sector that they may not have otherwise had.
In talking about the excitement being generated by the Emerging Leaders Initiative, Joye Blanscett, SMACNA’s Director of Labor Services and Human Resources Management, said that "we are excited to keep the forward momentum going with emerging leaders as we explore, with them, how SMACNA and SMART can support their development and foster continued networking among this group of amazing individuals."
