SMACNA supports the proposed reforms, while also suggesting additional changes to the final rule.
SNIPS News has published an article highlighting SMACNA’s submitted comments to the Department of Labor on proposed efforts to modernize National Registered Apprenticeship standards.
SMACNA’s comments supported the reforms while providing some ideas for incorporating additional reforms into the final rule. Some of these proposals include defining more apparent roles for state apprenticeship agencies and other stakeholders within the National Apprenticeship System; strengthening labor standards and providing better performance data; creating a Registered Career and Technical Education Apprenticeship designed to make it more seamless for full-time high school and community college students to enroll in a registered apprenticeship; and codifying the Office of Apprenticeship’s role for national leadership, promotion, and standards.
SMACNA believes that these updates would ensure that apprentices receive broad-based, quality training that would provide them with marketable skills for their careers and further the DOL’s goals of ‘rebuilding the middle class.
SMACNA’s comments contrasted with those from the Associated Builders and Contractors, who criticized the changes.
