Paul Pimentel

Paul Pimentel is the director of communications at SMART, where he has spent more than two decades helping shape the union’s communications strategy, digital presence and public voice.

Raised in Rhode Island, Pimentel began his career in the labor movement as a researcher and later an organizer with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). In 2001, he founded the Mid-Atlantic Regional Organizing Coalition, known as MAROC. He joined the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association in 2004, working in research and communications and later helping communicate the organization’s evolution into SMART.

Beginning in 2007, Pimentel focused increasingly on digital media. He developed much of the union’s early new-media infrastructure at a time when many labor organizations had not yet fully embraced digital communications. That work helped position the union to communicate more directly and effectively with members, leaders and the public across emerging platforms.

Pimentel lives in Montclair, Virginia, and is the father of three sons.
