Every cybersecurity program begins with Identify, since you cannot manage risks you do not understand. This step helps answer some basic questions, such as "What does the organization own?" What does it rely on? What information does it use? What would cause the most harm if it were lost, changed, or exposed? Identify is more than just a one-time inventory or a compliance checklist. It lays the groundwork so that every other function can focus on what truly matters.
