SMACNA, TAUC, NECA and MCAA publish Pre-Qualification Article

SMACNA's Safety Director recently on Construction User piece with colleagues from NECA, MCAA, and TAUC.

Justin Crandol, SMACNA’s Director of Safety, recently collaborated with several industry peers on a story published in Construction User, The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC) official magazine. In the piece, Crandol, and representatives from TAUC, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), and the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) wrote about reexamining the pre-qualification process.

According to the piece, there are growing concerns that the pre-qualification process has expanded beyond its original intent of reporting required data on core issues such as safety and risk management. The story illustrates contractor frustration because there are now numerous third-party reporting tools and the resulting expense in terms of time and finances. More insight into these challenges was gained through a survey of contractors conducted beginning in October 2021. Respondents detailed their issues with the current system. These included the number of human resources dedicated to reporting. Much of the data was not pertinent to the same job being performed.

Those surveyed believed there needs to be a universal reporting system that streamlines how they provide information to clients. All the associations responsible for the survey are beginning the exploratory process of building such a framework.
