John Franco, SMACNA’s Long Time Director of Meetings and Convention Retires

37-year long career leaves an enduring mark on SMACNA, built on a legacy of hard work, kindness, indelible experiences, golf expertise and being a beloved member of the SMACNA family.

John Franco

After 37 years of service, John Franco, SMACNA’s long-time Director of Meetings and Convention, retired.    John Franco started with SMACNA in 1988 as a production assistant, helping prepare for SMACNA’s meetings and convention and compiling committee meeting materials.    Early on, John was recognized for his strong work ethic and meticulous attention to detail.  By 2005, he was promoted to Meetings Specialist, handling SMACNA’s many committee meetings and education programs. As a trained EMT, John also instituted first aid, CPR, and AED training to SMACNA’s staff, which continues today.  Always helpful, his friendly personality and willingness to plan every meeting for success led to his promotion to Co-Director of Meetings and Convention in 2006.

As Co-Director of Meetings and Convention, John worked diligently to provide members and chapters the best possible meetings and unforgettable convention experiences.  His attention to detail and his white gloved approach to events became legendary.  In 2013, John was promoted to Director of Meetings and Convention, taking the lead in the department upon the retirement of Mary Lou Taylor.    John continued to serve in that capacity, delivering the highest quality meetings and convention, year after year.  An avid golfer known to carry a Coors Light or two in his golf cart, John became friends with many members and chapters over the years.  He was appreciated and loved by all who worked with him. John announced his retirement in February, citing family health issues.  Despite SMACNA’s best efforts to continue to employ him part-time through the end of the year, he retired in April after 37 years of service.   John left an enduring mark on SMACNA and will be remembered for his hard work, kindness, indelible experiences, golf expertise, and happiness working with SMACNA members.  Although he has officially retired, John Franco is being inducted into the College of Fellows at the annual convention in Maui.   Please join us in wishing him a wonderful retirement.
