Implementing Core Values at General Sheet Metal

Ashley Duncan, Director of Operations at General Sheet Metal, discussed their unique approach to creating a robust and welcoming workplace culture.

In a recent conversation with Ashley Duncan, Director of Operations at General Sheet Metal, I was able to understand their unique approach to creating a workplace culture that they can implement effectively and be proud of. One of the biggest changes GSM made was to narrow down their core values from ten to only four. In doing so, they could focus more closely on the attributes that matter most to their company. The top four values they chose were: teamwork, transparency, innovation, and reliability.

Because they reworked their system to revolve around these four qualities, GSM strives to hire, and fire, based on them. Duncan explained, “In our hiring process we incorporate behavioral questions that align with our core values to better assess a candidate’s fit. Conversely, if we see individuals acting against our core values, we strive to address it quickly, engaging in difficult conversations early on.” Although living by these values can be tough for a business it sets up an expectation not only for employees but employers too.

Ashley Duncan also expressed the importance of their leadership team at GSM. She recognizes that change and consistency starts with them. “For core values to be engraved and evident throughout the organization, leaders have to hold themselves accountable to living the core values daily. By creating a culture where employees consistently see those core values in action, especially from top leadership, these principles become an integral part of the organization,” says Duncan. Through their accountability, leadership, and transparency General Sheet Metal has created a great culture and thriving team.
