800+ Technicians on What Slows Them Down

823 technicians share what’s slowing them down: field-to-office miscommunication, last-minute scheduling changes, and limited career visibility.

ServiceTrade has released its 2026 Technician Insights Report, based on feedback from 823 service technicians.

The findings challenge common assumptions. Technicians don’t have a job satisfaction problem. They have a coordination problem. While 55% say they take pride in skilled work and solving real problems, nearly half cite miscommunication with the office and last-minute scheduling changes as the biggest obstacles to productivity.

Retention is also clearer than many expect. Career advancement ranked as the top factor that would keep technicians at a company long-term, ahead of recognition, work-life balance, and even pay increases. Technicians want to see a future in the trades, not just a job.

The report also explores how the modern technician views technology and AI. Twenty-eight percent are already using AI tools at work, primarily to save time and assist with documentation and troubleshooting. Another 25% say they’re interested. The message is practical: technology must remove friction, not add steps.

For mechanical contractors focused on technician productivity, labor shortages, and sustainable growth, this report offers direct insight from the field on what to fix, what to invest in, and how to build a stronger service team.
