ServiceTrade’s 2025 Technician Insights Report: Your Guide to Building a Stronger, More Efficient Service Team. The commercial service industry faces a growing challenge: a severe shortage of skilled technicians. According to the newly released 2025 Technician Insights Report from ServiceTrade, hiring is the top concern for 53% of commercial service business owners, a problem compounded by industry growth and an aging workforce—26% of technicians are nearing retirement. Despite these challenges, ServiceTrade’s new survey of 650+ technicians in the fire safety and mechanical services industries reveals what techs need to be more productive, happier, and stay with a company longer.

Competitive pay, training opportunities, and efficient work environments are top priorities for technicians. While 54% of surveyed techs believe their profession offers a solid financial future, many express frustration with inefficiencies such as excessive paperwork (49%), poor office communication (22%), and scheduling issues (11%).

What Technicians Want To boost job satisfaction and retention, businesses should focus on: Streamlining operations – Techs need better access to job and customer information (24%) and digital tools to reduce administrative burdens.

Investing in training – Nearly half (49%) want professional development opportunities, and 27% seek additional training.

Providing flexibility – A majority (59%) believe better work-life balance would improve job satisfaction.
