Help Raise Awareness About Building Safety

Building Safety Week topics include energy and innovation, training, safety, and disaster preparedness. Modules are available online and can be completed at your own pace, anytime and anywhere from the convenience of your computer. A free Campaign Toolkit includes template resources, such as news releases, advertising, and pre-written social media posts to help drive awareness of building safety topics in your community.

Core Report Shows Domestic Raw Steel Production Up

Majestic Steel's May 24th Core Report focuses on metal costs and production, showing domestic raw steel production increased last week. The ABI also climbed for the third consecutive month, coming in at 57.9, up from 55.6 in March and up sharply from 29.5 in April 2020.

Updated Guidelines for Fully Vaccinated Individuals

The new CDC guidelines allow for fully vaccinated individuals to no longer wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by law or other rules and regulations, including local business and workplace guidelines and policies.

New COVID-19 Workplace Antigen Testing

Antigen tests are an effective tool to help employers prevent the spread COVID-19 in the workplace. When used for screening employees in non-healthcare workplaces, antigen tests can detect current infection before an employee enters the workplace or returns to work.

TAUC Releases 2021 Craft Labor Supply Study

The report shows that the shortage of union craft workers continues. Despite modest gains, the study also reveals that among sheet metal workers, the reported average shortage remained steady at 2.3%. The shortage for sheet metal apprenticeships in 2020 was 40%.

TAB Contractor, EB&I, Helps Businesses in New Mexico Evaluate Their HVAC Systems

The pandemic helped create some amazing opportunities for contractors like Tony Kocurek, owner of Energy Balance &, Integration (EB&I), an Albuquerque, N.M.-based TAB business. In 2020, EB&I helped customers from hospitals to casinos address their changing HVAC system needs, not only to deal with extreme climate issues, but also due to the pandemic.

The American Rescue Plan Act expands the paid leave and paid family leave tax credit for employers with fewer than 500 employees as part of an effort to encourage workers to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

SMACNA Western Washington, in partnership with Rite Aid and member companies Holaday Parks, Hermanson, PSF, Holmberg, Mac-Miller, and Johansen Mechanical, has been holding COVID vaccination clinics in an effort to get contractors and their employees vaccinated.

NIOSH App Helps Track PPE

The NIOSH PPE Tracker mobile app can help employers in the construction industry keep track of their personal protective equipment (PPE) inventory. Facilities can use the app to calculate their average PPE consumption rate or “burn rate.”

SMACNA Board Approves Major Initiatives; Future Funding Requirements

In July 2019, the SMACNA Board of Directors agreed to commit resources to major new initiatives. The first and largest relates to workforce development. The Board agreed to a long-term program to improve the awareness of the HVAC / sheet metal industry and the opportunities it presents so that our industry is perceived by highly qualified candidates as an industry of choice for successful craft and non-craft professional careers.
