Juneteenth is a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to announce that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were free – a full two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year, we invite all SMACNA members to join us for a special Juneteenth Learning Journey, which will be held on Wednesday, June 28th, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
During this webinar, Tsione Wolde-Michael, Historian and former Smithsonian Museum Curator will explore the origins of Juneteenth and its importance in American history. She will also discuss how Juneteenth is celebrated today and why it remains so important to millions of Americans. Attendees can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history and have the opportunity to hear SMACNA and SMART members share the importance of Juneteenth in their lives.
