White House Announces Funding for Battery Recycling Technology

Initiative will provide $192 million in new funding directed to expand the US battery recycling industry by launching an advanced battery research and development (R&D) consortium, and the continuation of the Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize.

The Biden Administration announced a slate of new efforts designed to advance battery recycling technology and new manufacturing infrastructure within the United States through a robust research and development push. Within this package of funding opportunities are more than $192 million in new funding for recycling batteries from consumer products, launching an advanced battery research and development (R&D) consortium, and the continuation of the Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Prize. With American demand for electric vehicles continuing to surge, the need for improving technologies that assist in reducing battery costs is more important than ever. SMACNA contractors have a vital leading role to play in this effort, as our members are often responsible for some of the critical work in building the facilities that drive this infrastructure forward.
