The guest speaker will be Dr. Sandy Placido, Assistant Professor of History at Rutgers University. Her research and teaching background focuses on the Caribbean and Americas, with a special emphasis on the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, Latinx peoples, and the contributions of women and people of African descent. During this Learning Journey Dr. Placido will explore the roots of the Hispanic community, spanning Latin countries and their emigration to the Americas, as well as the relationship between the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. She will delve into the origins of Hispanic Heritage Month itself and explain the demographics shaping the United States today, including the significance of terminology surrounding the Hispanic identity. To make this journey even more compelling, Dr. Placido will share the inspiring story of Luisa Moreno, a labor leader and social activist in the U.S. during the 1920s.
